THE OLD TESTAMENT IN THE NEW
Many passages of the Old Testament are quoted or alluded to in the New Testament. Matthew, Peter, Paul and Jesus quote the OT, to name a few. In this group of readings we will look at some Old Testament
scriptures and how they are used in the New. Some OT quotes in the NT are different due to manuscript differences. Our OT is primarily based on a family of Hebrew manuscripts known as the Masoretic Text
(MT). The Old Testament used by NT Christians was the Greek language Septuagint (LXX). Some OT/NT differences are due to paraphrases, summaries or even mistakes (like attributing quotes to the wrong OT
authors, see Mal 3:1 & Zechariah 11).
It will be especially helpful to compare traditional and modern translations in the obscure passages. Read the OT passage first,and maybe a few surrounding verses to get the context. Then read the NT
quotation. The larger NT story as well as the specific verse(s) are both indicated. A few controversial passages have been included. All references are to the common versions.
