On September 11, 2001, two hijacked airplanes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and a third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon near the U.S. capital.  A fourth hijacked plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Thousands of lives were lost.
